‘Ip Man 3’ Trailer: Donnie Yen Fights Mike Tyson
Back in March, we reported that the long-awaited Ip Man 3 is finally moving forward, with Donnie Yen returning to star as the title character, and heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson also coming aboard. Today, MovieClips has the first domestic trailer for this highly-anticipated sequel, with Well Go USA setting a January 22, 2016 release date. Ip Man 3 will be going up against Dirty Grandpa and The Boy in its new release date.
Our original report from March revealed that the producers had planned on using a CGI version of late martial arts legend Bruce Lee, which certainly caused some controversy. Just one week later, it was reported that Bruce Lee’s estate was trying to stop the production from using this CGI version. While we never got an update about the lawsuit filed by Bruce Lee’s family, the film’s IMDB page lists Kwok-Kwan Chan (Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer) as portraying Bruce Lee, so it seems that both sides came to some sort of an agreement.

‘Ip Man 3’: Bruce Lee Estate Tries to Stop CGI Apperance
Last week, we reported that the sequel Ip Man 3 has cast former boxing champ Mike Tyson alongside Donnie Yen. The production also announced that they will use a CGI rendering of Bruce Lee, as opposed to casting an actor to play the martial arts icon. Today, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Bruce Lee’s family is trying to stop his name, likeness and story from being used in director Wilson Yip’s movie.
2010’s Ip Man and 2011’s Ip Man 2 are both based on the true story of Ip Man (Donnie Yen), the martial arts master who created the style known as Wing Chun, whose most famous student was Bruce Lee. The first two movies did not feature Bruce Lee as a character, focusing on Ip Man’s early years in China. The producers could not find a suitable actor to play Bruce Lee on screen in Ip Man 3, so they decided to create his likeness using CGI.

‘Ip Man 3’ Will Star Mike Tyson and CG Bruce Lee
Ip Man 3 just introduced two interesting additions to its cast. Former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson is coming aboard, and will fight the legendary Donnie Yen, who reprises his role as the title character. If that wasn’t cool and/or weird enough for you, the filmmakers also plan to utilize a CG version of Bruce Lee as opposed to having an actor portray the Kung Fu legend.
The story of Ip Man follows a Chinese martial artists who lived from 1893 to 1972. The man popularized the fighting style of Wing Chun, a technique that specializes in close-range combat. His most famous pupil was Bruce Lee, who would later go onto develop his own discipline called Jeet Kune Do. Born in Foshan, Guangdong, China, Ip moved to Hong Kong and opened Wing Chun school in 1949. This will be the first of the sequels to feature Bruce Lee as himself. The producers of the film were unable to find an actor that could portray the kung fu legend’s intensity on screen, which is why they are going the CG route, hoping to recreate the most authentic Bruce Lee possible.
