22 years after getting his first Oscar nomination in 1994 for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his first Oscar for his riveting performance in The Revenant last night. What many don’t realize is, when the winners receive their Oscar on stage, it’s completely blank, and after the ceremony, each winner gets their award engraved. Earlier today, Variety posted a new video on their Twitter account, which shows the actor getting his Oscar nameplate engraved.
Leonardo DiCaprio was previously nominated for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator, Blood Diamond and The Wolf of Wall Street. Perhaps one of his most infamous Oscar moments was when he wasn’t even nominated for the record-breaking blockbuster Titanic, which went on to win 11 Oscars including Best Picture. The actor didn’t even show up to the Oscar ceremony in 1998, which lead some to theorize that the Academy was collectively upset that he didn’t put in an appearance.
The video shows a visibly pleased Leonardo DiCaprio watching as his name is etched onto the gold plate, asking the engraver, “Do you guys do this every year? I wouldn’t know.” After the engraving is finished, the actor is handed a set of instructions for how to maintain his statuette, and it seems that there’s quite a bit of upkeep that it takes to keep one’s Oscar in pristine condition. After waiting more than two decades for his first little gold man, we can only imagine that the actor will follow these instructions to a T.
Earlier today, the social media site Twitter revealed that the actor’s win for The Revenant was the most-tweeted moment in Oscar history, with over 440,000 tweets per-minute. The moment beat out the previous record of 255,000 Tweets per minute, set when Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres tweeted out a selfie with several major stars, back in 2014. The Revenant ended up winning three awards in total last night, with Alejandro González Iñárritu winning for Best Director and Emmanuel Lubezki winning for Best Cinematography.
The movie ended up with the second most awards of any movie, behind the six awards collected by Mad Max: Fury Road, but Leo’s time on the Oscar stage, and his impassioned speech that follow, is considered by many to be the night’s best moment. Are you glad that Leonardo DiCaprio finally got his first Oscar last night? Chime in with your thoughts, after watching this new video below.

Walt Disney Pictures is now pre-selling tickets for the live-action adaptation of the classic tale, The Jungle Book. You can be the first to live the legend on April 15 and get your tickets today.
Directed by Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”), based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire.
The all-star cast also includes Lupita Nyong’o (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as the voice of the fiercely protective mother wolf Raksha, and Giancarlo Esposito as the voice of wolf pack’s alpha male Akela. “The Jungle Book” seamlessly blends live-action with photorealistic CGI animals and environments, using up-to-the-minute technology and storytelling techniques to immerse audiences in an enchanting and lush world. The wild adventure swings into theaters in 3D on April 15, 2016.

20th Century Fox has shifted its release calendar over the weekend, moving up Alien: Covenant from October 6, 2017 to August 4, 2017, while giving Shane Black’s Predator remake a March 2, 2018 date. The Predator project doesn’t have any direct competition in its new date, but Alien: Covenant will face Universal’s Pitch Perfect 3 and Open Road Films’ Blazing Samurai on August 4, 2017. It remains to be seen if any of the other studios will shift their release schedule accordingly in the wake of these new dates.
The studio pushed an untitled Fox/Marvel movie into the October 7, 2016 slot, while issuing a January 12, 2018 date for another untitled Fox/Marvel project. It’s certainly possible that one of these dates could be reserved for Deadpool 2, which the studio recently gave the green light to in the wake of Deadpool‘s massive box office success. The studio hasn’t issued an official date for that sequel yet, so we’ll have to wait and see. Also opening on January 12, 2018 is Paramount’s Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes and Warner Bros.’ Untitled Blade Runner Project.
Finally, 20th Century Fox has moved Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children from Christmas Day 2016 to September 30, 2016, where it will face STX Entertainment’s Besties, Lionsgate’s Deepwater Horizon, High Top Releasing’s Delirium and Relativity’s Masterminds. It has also moved Ferdiannd from April 7, 2017 to July 21, 2017, Why Him? to Christmas Day, from November 11, 2016) and taken The Mountain Between Us off of its schedule.
Prometheus star Michael Fassbender returns as the android David, along with franchise newcomers Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride and Demián Bichir. Ridley Scott teased last month that he’s aiming for a hard R rating, which makes sense since all of the previous Alien movies were R except Alien Vs. Predator. While no official plot details have been given yet, we know this will be the first in a new trilogy that will eventually lead up to the original Alien.
Ridley Scott is directing from a script by Jack Paglen, Michael Green and John Logan. It has also been confirmed by the director that Alien: Covenant will feature some sort of connection to Sigourney Weaver‘s iconic Ellen Ripley character from the original Alien. Some have speculated that we may even see Ripley conceived on the Covenant ship, and that Katherine Waterston‘s character may actually be Ripley’s mother.
Alien: Covenant comes to theaters August 4th, 2017.
Predator comes to theaters March 2nd, 2018.

For a movie that may not have been made if not for leaked test footage, Deadpool is proved to be a box office gamble that has already paid off in spades. The superhero adventure has taken in $285.6 million domestically and $266.4 million internationally for a global total of $552.1 million. Deadpool will face three new releases at the box office this weekend, Lionsgate’s Gods of Egypt, 20th Century Fox’s Eddie the Eagle and Open Road Films’ Triple 9. Deadpool had no trouble winning for a third weekend in a row, taking in $31.5 million.
While Deadpool has had success beyond most analysts’ expectations, its second weekend drop of 57.4% could mean that it may not have as much staying power in theaters. For example, throughout Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ 10-week run in theaters, they have only posted a decrease of more than 50% once, and they have consistently managed to drop somewhere in the 30% range almost every weekend, which is surely a factor in its record-breaking success of $921.7 million domestic and $2.04 billion worldwide. Then again, Deadpool only cost $58 million to produce, so it is already wildly successful, even if it does continue to drop 50% or more each weekend.
After receiving a slew of positive reviews, Deadpool shattered the record for highest grossing R-rated opening weekend of $91.7 million, held for 13 years by The Matrix Reloaded. It also broke Fifty Shades of Grey’s February record of $85.1 million, along with its four-day President’s Day weekend record ($93 million), the record for highest-grossing R-rated comic book adaptation (300, $70.8 million), largest winter opening weekend (American Sniper, $89.2 million) and it became the biggest opening ever for 20th Century Fox, surpassing 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith record of $108.4 million.
Gods of Egypt opened in second place with $14 million, followed by Kung Fu Panda 3 in third place with $9 million, Risen in fourth place with $7 million, Eddie the Eagle in fifth place with $6.3 million and Triple 9 in sixth place with $6.1 million. The projections are certainly interesting, since the R-rated thriller Triple 9 is only expected to open in 2,000 theaters and it currently stands just below “Fresh” at Rotten Tomatoes, with a 59% score. Gods of Egypt is expected to open in 3,000 theaters, while Eddie the Eagle is also opening in approximately 2,000 theaters. While there is no RT score for Gods of Egypt yet, Eddie the Eagle is a critical hit with a 76% Fresh rating. It’s possible that Triple 9 potentially out-grossing two PG-13 movies could be a by-product of Deadpool’s unconventional success, as fans may be hungry for more R-rated content.
Triple 9 follows a group of thieves who plan to kill a young LAPD officer to divert the police away from a daring heist they’re perpetrating across town. The title Triple 9 refers to police code indicating that an officer needs immediate assistance. The all-star cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Casey Affleck, Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Teresa Palmer, Gal Gadot, Woody Harrelson, Norman Reedus and Clifton Collins Jr.. John Hillcoat directs from a script by newcomer Matt Cook.
Gods of Egypt is an action-adventure inspired by the classic mythology of Egypt, where magic, monsters, gods and madness reign throughout the palaces and pyramids of the Nile River Valley. With the survival of mankind hanging in the balance, an unexpected hero takes a thrilling journey to save the world and rescue his true love. Set (Gerard Butler), the merciless god of darkness, has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict. With only a handful of heroic rebels opposing Set’s savage rule, Bek (Brenton Thwaites), a bold and defiant mortal, enlists the aid of powerful god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in an unlikely alliance against the evil overlord. As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen take them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the spectacular final confrontation.
Inspired by true events, Eddie the Eagle is a feel-good story about Michael “Eddie” Edwards (Taron Egerton), an unlikely but courageous British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach (Hugh Jackman), Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. The supporting cast includes Christopher Walken, Rune Temte and Tim McInnerny in director Dexter Fletcher’s drama.
Rounding out the top 10 this weekend is Triple 9 ($6.1 million), How to Be Single ($5.1 million), The Witch ($5 million), Race ($4.2 million) and The Revenant ($3.8 million). Also opening in limited release is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, which will also debut simultaneously on Netflix, a re-issue of Akira Kurosawa’s Ran and Tere Bin Laden – Dead Or Alive and a pair of documentaries, IFC’s King Georges and Gravitas Ventures’ The Last Man On the Moon. It will be interesting to see how Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny fares in theaters while simultaneously streaming at the same time. This strategy didn’t exactly pay off for Netflix’s first narrative feature, Beasts of No Nation, which only earned $90,777 in a two-week theatrical run.
Looking ahead to next weekend, there will be four new movies hitting theaters, to kick off the month of March. Take a look at the box office estimates for this weekend, and check back on Tuesday for next week’s predictions. Disney’s Zootopia, Focus Features’ action sequel London Has Fallen, Paramount’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and The Other Side of the Door will all open in wide release. Arriving in limited release is Broad Green Pictures’ Knight of Cups, the latest from Terrence Malick, Magnolia’s The Wave and Strand’s Mekong Hotel. Be sure to check back on Sunday for the box office estimates, but, until then, take a look at the projections for the weekend of February 26.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is almost in theaters, and the promotional machine has hit light speed. Everywhere you look, the ominous logos of its two iconic superheroes are everywhere, crowding billboards and buses, breakfast cereal boxes and toy isles. So why should the comic book store be any different. This is where these titans originated. So of course it makes sense that DC Comics is using the movie to sell its most recent line-up of monthly adventures.
Both the Dark Knight and The Man of Steel will be gracing the covers of quite a few DC Comics titles thourghout the month of March. And we have a look at two of those variant covers here, which show Bruce Wayne and Kal-El locked in deadly battle. Artists Stephen Platt and Massimo Carnevale are responsible for these specially-polybagged upcoming issues of Grayson and Wonder Woman.
ComicBookResources has the full list of upcoming comic book issues that will feature their own variant covers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The artists are also listed: 3/2: Detective Comics #50 (variant by Rafael Grampa). 3/9: Action Comics #50 (variant by Martin Ansin). 3/9: Batman/Superman #30 (variant by Kevin Maguire). 3/16: Robin Son of Batman #10 (variant by Ryan Ottley). 3/16: Superman #50 (variant by Kaare Andrews). 3/23: Batman #50 (variant by Chris Daughtry and Jim Lee). 3/23: Grayson #18 (variant by Stephen Platt). 3/23: Superman/Wonder Woman #27 (variant by Charlie Adlard). 3/23: Wonder Woman #50 (variant by Massimo Carnevale). 3/30: Batgirl #50 (variant by Kevin Nowlan).
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has come under a lot of fan fire lately. Some entertainment blogs have reported that the movie is in trouble. With a ballooning budget of over $400 million, which includes promotional costs, Warner Bros. is said to be very nervous. Test screenings have not resulted in praise so much as confusion. It was speculated that the movie, if it tanks at the box office, could delay or even completely derail plans for the upcoming Justice League. But last week, DC and Warner Bros. confirmed that the movie, to be directed by Zack Snyder, is shooting this April. The director even later tweeted out a photo from the set, standing alongside Aquaman star Jason Momoa.
Following his titanic struggle against General Zod, Metropolis has been razed to the ground and Superman is the most controversial figure in the world. While for many he is still an emblem of hope, a growing number of people consider him a threat to humanity, seeking justice for the chaos he has brought to Earth. As far as Bruce Wayne is concerned, Superman is clearly a danger to society. He fears for the future of the world with such a reckless power left ungoverned, and so he dons his mask and cape to right Superman‘s wrongs. The rivalry between them is furious, fueled by bitterness and vengeance, and nothing can dissuade them from waging this war. However, a dark new threat arises in the form of a third man: one who has a power greater than either of them to endanger the world and cause total destruction.
From director Zack Snyder comes Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, starring Oscar winner Ben Affleck (Argo) as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent in the characters’ first big-screen pairing. The film also stars Oscar nominees Amy Adams (American Hustle) as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) as Lex Luthor, Diane Lane (Unfaithful) as Martha Kent, and Laurence Fishburne (What’s Love Got to Do with It) as Perry White; Oscar winners Jeremy Irons (Reversal of Fortune) as Alfred, and Holly Hunter (The Piano) as Senator Finch; and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. Zack Snyder directed from a screenplay written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer, based on characters from DC Comics, including Batman, created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, and Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The film is produced by Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder, with Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and David S. Goyer serving as executive producers.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice launches Warner Bros. new DC Comics slate of movies over the next several years. Next up will be Suicide Squad (August 5, 2016), followed by Wonder Woman (June 23, 2017), Justice League Part 1 (November 17, 2017), The Flash (March 23, 2018), Aquaman (July 27, 2018), Shazam! (April 5, 2019), Justice League Part 2 (June 14, 2019), Cyborg (April 3, 2020) and Green Lantern Corps. (June 19, 2020). Take a look at the first DC Comics variant covers below.

Many fans were shocked when the third full-length trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice revealed Doomsday as one of the main villains. Ever since, people have been wondering about the identity behind the person who brought this CGI monstrosity to life. Today, that actor has come forward to confirm his part in helping to create Doomsday for the big screen.
The man behind Doomsday is none other than Robin Atkin Downes. And he already has a quite storied history with the Batman franchise. On the animated side of things, he first voiced characters for the 2008 Batman: The Brave and The Bold TV series, playing such DC villains as Firefly and the Weather Wizard. In 2011’s Batman: Year One, he played District Attorney Harvey Dent. He voiced Oliver Queen in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2. Most recently, he voiced several characters in this year’s Batman: Bad Blood, bringing http://movieweb.com/alice-through-looking-glass-movie-trailer-2016/The Mad Hatter, Jervis Tetch and Electrocutioner to life. He also portrays The Master in FX’s hit horror series The Strain, and Cham Syndulla on Star Wars Rebels. Here’s what Robin Atkin Downes had to say about playing Doomsday.
“Very proud to release that I helped bring #Doomsday to life in the upcoming @BatmanvSuperman #Dreamgigs”
With Doomsday being a mostly CGI character, several teams of people will be responsible for fully rendering the creature for the big screen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Robin Atkin Downes will be giving voice to the villain, and lending a Mo-Cap hand in terms of perfecting his movements. The process is described as being similar to what Deadpool did with Colossus. While Stefan Kapicic provided the voice and some of the Mo-Cap work, other actors and VFX supervisors were equally responsible for making that character what it eventually became.
Man of Steel star Michael Shannon has confirmed that he participated in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, playing the cadaver of his doomed villain Zod. It has been rumored that Doomsday is created from the body of Zod. Though, it isn’t know if Michael Shannon has contributed anything to the performance of Doomsday as we’ll see him on screen. None of the other VFX team has been named at this time. Nor is it known if Doomsday will be able to speak intelligently, or if he will only be able to communicate in grunts and roars.
Doomsday is said to not be the only big villain making an appearance at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Though, we’re not quite sure who might make an appearance during the climatic third act of the movie. We know that Lex Luthor is climbing into his Kryptonian armor at some point, and that he brings Aquaman into the fight. We’re also supposed to see the rest of the Justice League. But it’s unclear in what capacity. However it shakes out, at least we know there is a human heart beating behind the CGI exterior of Doomsday. And that heart belongs to one Mr. Robin Atkin Downes.
Very proud to release that I helped bring #Doomsday to life in the upcoming @BatmanvSuperman#Dreamgigs

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice comes to theaters March 25th, 2016.
Tony Burton, who played the boxing trainer Tony “Duke” Evers in the long-running Rocky movie franchise, passed away in Los Angeles earlier today, at the age of 78. M Live confirmed the actor’s death with his sister, Loretta “Peaches” Kelly. His sister revealed that the actor had been hospitalized several times over the past year, but he was never officially diagnosed with any illness at the time of his death. Due to his health, the actor was never able to see the Rocky spinoff Creed.
Tony Burton was born March 23, 1937 in Flint, Michigan, USA, and long before he portrayed Apollo Creed‘s (Carl Weathers) trainer Duke in all six Rocky movies, the actor was a boxer himself. Tony Burton won two Flint Golden Gloves trophies in the light heavyweight division in 1955 and 1957, after excelling in football and baseball for Flint Northern High School. He went on to box professionally, with a 16-3 professional boxing record, and he once held the Light-Heavyweight Championship of Arizona.
After appearing in a number of guest starring TV show roles throughout the mid-1970s, Tony Burton landed the Duke Evers role in Rocky, along with a role in another 1970s classic, Assault on Precinct 13. Along with Sylvester Stallone and Burt Ward, Tony Burton is the only other actor to appear in all six Rocky movies. While he didn’t appear in Creed, he is seen in a photograph in Rocky Balboa‘ restaurant. Wood Harris played Duke’s son, Tony ‘Little Duke’ Evers, who runs Apollo’s gym, the Delphi Boxing Academy.
Aside from the Rocky franchise, Tony Burton also starred in The Shining, Stir Crazy, Inside Moves, Armed and Dangerous, House Party 2, Hook and Shade. He retired from acting in 2007, one year after starring in Rocky Balboa. The actor is survived by his wife Rae and one child.
Rocky star Carl Weathers expressed his condolences on his Twitter page earlier today, as did the official Twitter account of MGM Studios, which distributes all of the Rocky. Will you be watching the Rocky movies this weekend to honor the late Tony Burton? Chime in with your thoughts below.
@E_Woodyard@TheSlyStallone Sad news. RIP Tony Burton. His intensity and talent helped make the Rocky movies successful. #BePeace

Quentin Tarantino hates Disney. He feels betrayed by the company he’s made millions of dollars for in the past. And he’s now vowed never to work for the studio in any capacity ever again. Why is the director of such classics as Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction so upset with the Mouse House? It all has to do with Star Wars: The Force Awakens!
Quentin Tarantino doesn’t have any kind of beef with director J.J. Abrams, or the movie itself. When the iconic filmmaker was set to open his latest revenge Western The Hateful Eight in 70mm this past Christmas, he planned to show the movie in the legendary Cinerama Dome, which is now part of Arc Light theaters in Hollywood. But Disney took over the theater, and used it instead to screen Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Quentin Tarantino felt the move was done intentionally, and is holding a grudge.
It’s been almost two months since Quentin Tarantino first fumed about this on Howard Stern‘s XM radio show. But he’s still angry. And it doesn’t look like he’ll be getting over this anytime soon. The Hateful Eight 70mm Roadshow was being used as a big selling point for the movie. It was intended to get distributors and audiences once again interested in the large film format. And he targeted the Cinerama Dome as a centerpiece location for the exhibition, as the theater, which was opened in 1963, was build for the sole purpose of presenting widescreen Cinerama films.
Throughout the country, Tarantino traveled, helping to install several 70mm projectors himself. But the Cinerama theater already had its 70mm projector long-in place. It seemed like a no brainer that The Hateful Eight would be exhibited there. But Disney reportedly strong-armed the Arc Light theater, threatening to pull Star Wars: The Force Awakens from all their screens if they did not comply with showing it in the Cinerama Dome. When asked by NYDailyNews.com if the director had made peace with Disney, he made it very clear that he most certainly has not.
“No, they fucked me over. I would never work (with Disney) in any way, shape or form after what they did to me. They fucked me over, and I made them a lot of money for Pulp Fiction, and that really is a bad way to treat a former employee who has worked very well for them.”
Miramax, who distributed Pulp Fiction back in 1994, was owned by Disney at the time. While Quentin Tarantino says he had an agreement with Arc Light to show The Hateful Eight in the Cinerama Dome, he claims Disney threatened to boycott the theater chain if they did not abide by the studios wishes. Since the original claim, there has been some evidence that the filmmaker’s statement may not be entirely true. And part of his lingering resentment may stem from the fact that The Hateful Eight did not perform as well as expected at the box office.
Some fans had hoped that Quentin Tarantino may one day direct a Marvel superhero movie. But that sounds impossible now. While promoting The Hateful Eight, the director did reveal he once almost directed a Luke Cage movie. This was before Disney won back the rights and turned the title into a Netflix series. At the time, Quentin Tarantino instead decided to do Pulp Fiction. And it probably turned out for the better. Directing a superhero movie isn’t out of the realm of possibility for Quentin Tarantino. But he boldly states, “If I wanted to do something like that, I’d want to create the superhero myself.” What do you think? Disappointed that we’ll never see a Quentin Tarantino directed Star Wars movie?
The Hateful Eight was released December 25th, 2015.

In just a few short months, Game of Thrones will return with Season 6, debuting on Sunday, April 24 at 9 PM ET on HBO. Aside from a few cryptic trailers, photos and posters, we haven’t seen much of this new season yet, and HBO hasn’t even released an official plot rundown. Fans are even more in the dark this season because the show has caught up to George R.R. Martin’s books, and it still isn’t known when he’ll publish his long-awaited sixth book, The Winds of Winter. IGN caught up with George R.R. Martin, who teased that one of his upcoming books has a twist which won’t be able to be used on the series.
“It involves a couple of characters, one of whom is dead on the show but not dead in the books. The show can’t do this stuff, because they killed a character that I have not killed. I get all this stuff about being bloody-minded, but [showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss] are bloodier than I am.”
While the series has largely stuck close to the novels, there are numerous characters who are still alive in the books that have been killed off in the series. Most recently, the series killed off Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane), with Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) finally getting a chance to avenge Renly Baratheon’s (Gethin Anthony) death. However, we never actually did see the death blow, since the director cut away before Brienne could bring her sword down.
Others who have died in the show, but not the books include Barristan Selmy (Ian McElhinney), who, in the novels, is left in charge of Meereen after Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) left on her dragon. In the books, Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) did die in the infamous Red Wedding, although she was later resurrected as Lady Stoneheart through the powers of Thoros of Myr, a follower of The Lord of Light, like Melisandre (Carice van Houten).
Many have wondered if Melisandre (Carice van Houten), who was seen mourning Stannis in the season finale last year, will use her powers to bring both Stannis and the beloved Jon Snow back from the dead. It’s also worth noting that both Stannis’ wife and daughter are still alive in the books, along with Meryn Trant, who was killed by Arya Stark (Maisie Williams). Who do you think this twist involves? Chime in with your thoughts and stay tuned for more on Game of Thrones.
Gods of Egypt is a silly, poorly acted CGI spectacle in the same vein as Clash of the Titans. It’s hard to imagine this is a film from Alex Proyas. The Australian director is one of my favorites. Having made The Crow and Dark City, the most underrated science fiction film of all time. Gods of Egypt is disappointing on many levels; a half-hearted effort at best by Proyas. Here is a film about Egyptian gods, where the entire primary cast is white, except for a token appearance by Chadwick Boseman. I can only imagine the producers could never have predicted their release date would coincide with Oscar weekend, where the diversity issue has taken Hollywood by storm. That said, a diverse cast could not have saved this train wreck.
The story takes place in ancient Egypt where humans and gods live side by side in a paradise on the Nile. The gods are twice the size of man, can turn into an animal form, and bleed pure gold. The benevolent god Osiris (Bryan Brown) has decided to pass the crown to his son Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), the god of the sky. During the lavish ceremony, Osiris is murdered by his jealous brother Set (Gerard Butler). He also defeats Horus, ripping out his eyes, the source of power. Hathor (Elodie Yung), the goddess of love, gives herself to Set in order to spare Horus, who is banished to the desert. Egypt fails into oppression and despair under Set’s tyrannical rule. An unlikely hero emerges in Bek (Brenton Thwaites), a criminal peasant that needs a miracle to save his beloved.
The performances in Gods of Egypt are terrible. Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau simple rehash their best known roles. Their characters could have easily been pulled from 300 and Game of Thrones. Chadwick Boseman, the only actor that could have passed for an ancient Egyptian, is smarmy and one-note as Thoth, the god of knowledge. Brenton Thwaites, a good young actor, has a perpetual smirk throughout. It’s as if his face had been botoxed during the entire shoot. The female roles are laughable. They’re treated as property. Sex objects to be passed around and gloated over. Again, it’s hard to believe this cast was directed by Alex Proyas.
Gods of Egypt is wall to wall with visual effects. The 3D is passable, but the film comes off like a video game. Some scenes, especially where they battle monsters, are well done. But the sweeping vistas of Egypt, the fights between the gods, and the human crowds look almost cartoonish. This may have been done on purpose. The film doesn’t strive to be a serious epic, more like a swords and sandals adventure. I reference Clash of the Titans again, because that’s what I believe they were attempting to do. Now the remake, as bad as that was, is still superior to this film. That pretty much lays out what to expect here.
The diversity problem had been a publicity headache for the studio, with Proyas even publicly lamenting the casting decisions. That means nothing to me as a critic. I walked into this film with zero expectations. What we got is a bad film, pure and simple. If this were a great movie with a fabulous script, then maybe the conversation could be had as to whether any actors of color were given a chance. But it isn’t, not by a mile. I’d bet that everyone involved: Proyas, his cast, the entire production apparatus, have set expectations low and have already put this in their rearview mirror. Gods of Egypt is a disaster.
Gods of Egypt comes to theaters February 26th, 2016.

Last week, Marvel announced that principal photography has begun on the highly-anticipated Phase Three sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with filming taking place in Atlanta. A few weeks prior, director James Gunn shared the first photo from the set, featuring the main cast rehearsing. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen much from the set since then, but today we have another photo from Karen Gillan, who teased her blue-skinned look as Nebula on her Twitter account.
The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre, Guardians of the Galaxy) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Guardians of the Galaxy, Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (Joy, American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, Furious 7).
Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten much information regarding who these new cast members are playing. Writer-director James Gunn has confirmed that Pom Klementieff is playing Mantis, and it is believed that Kurt Russell is playing Star-Lord’s father. James Gunn has said in the past that this sequel will reveal who Star-Lord’s mysterious dad was, stating it would not be the same person from the comics, J’son.
Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is produced by Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jonathan Schwartz, Nikolas Korda and Stan Lee serving as executive producers. The original Guardians of the Galaxy was a hit with critics and audiences alike, earning over $770 million at the worldwide box-office, and holds the record as the most successful debut film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition, the film’s soundtrack went platinum and was nominated for a Grammy.
In the original Guardians of the Galaxy, Nebula was one of the villains, who had a contentious relationship with her sister Gamora. There have been rumors that both Nebula and Yondu (Michael Rooker) will actually join the Guardians themselves, which could make things very interesting for this unique group. While we wait for more on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, take a look at the latest set photo, courtesy of Karen Gillan.

Back in summer 2007, audiences who flocked to theaters for Transformers were given the first look at a mysterious trailer, which offered no official title and didn’t list any cast members. All that was given was the release date (January 18, 2008) in this mysterious footage. The movie was eventually revealed as Cloverfield, from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company. Last month, Bad Robot unveiled a new surprise, the first trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a project which had previously been referred to as Valencia and The Cellar. Entertainment Weekly recently spoke to 10 Cloverfield Lane producer J.J. Abrams, who teased that there is an idea in play that could connect both this new movie and Cloverfield to a larger universe. Here’s what he had to say, when asked to address rumors that the movie is part of an original anthology series, teasing that Cloverfield 3 may be in the works.
“I think that would be presumptuous, because we’re talking about this movie and comparing it to Cloverfield, but I would be lying if I didn’t say there was something else that, if we’re lucky enough to do it, could be really cool that connects some stories. This is just this movie, and it’s only two films that we’re talking about right now. There is something else that we’d like to do, and hopefully we’ll get a shot.”
This project first surfaced back in April 2014, when Dan Trachtenberg signed on to make his directorial debut, following the success of his beloved fan film Portal: No Escape. The project was initially set up under Paramount’s Insurge banner, an off-shoot of the studio that focused on making low-budget films for under $5 million. The movie was shot and completed, with a cast that includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr., before Paramount shut down its Insurge banner.
A report surfaced last month that claimed Paramount picked up the project and brought on Daniel Casey and Damien Chazelle to perform some rewrites. 10 Cloverfield Lane then reportedly underwent some reshoots last March to connect this to the Cloverfield universe. None of these details have been confirmed, but producer J.J. Abrams did say last month that they had the idea long ago that this movie would be a “blood relative” to the original Cloverfield.
10 Cloverfield Lane centers on a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead who wakes up in a bunker, where a mysterious stranger (John Goodman) says he saved her after a car accident. He also reveals that the outside world is now uninhabitable due to a massive chemical attack. Do you hope 10 Cloverfield Lane does spawn some sort of Cloverfield anthology? What do you hope to see in Cloverfield 3?
10 Cloverfield Lane comes to theaters March 11th, 2016.
Unboxing a box of Five Nights At Freddys surprise blind bags. Which character is on the inside? Toy Bonnie, the puppet, Balloon boy, Golden Freddy?
The Walking Dead thrives on socking audiences with unpredictable outcomes. Characters near and dear to our hearts have become zombie buffets with little fanfare. Or die horribly in the most unexpected moments. How many tears were shed last season when Beth (Emily Kinney) got her head blown off? The writers are expert manipulators. At the beginning of this season, we were teased with Glenn’s (Steven Yeun) demise. Fans were apoplectic, but it was all smoke and mirrors for the ratings. We didn’t see him actually die, so no surprise when Glenn pops back in hero form. The real gut punch was Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) watching his make-out partner, Jessie (Alexandra Breckenridge) and her not ready for the apocalypse sons (Major Dodson, Austin Abrams), get devoured by walkers in the midseason premiere. Shocking is an understatement, but Rick’s grief at love lost was truly short lived.
Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Rick consummated their relationship in the finale of Sunday’s episode The Next World. Social media reaction gave the internet a seizure as fans clamored to discuss the possibilities. First, let’s get the racial nonsense out of the way. It is rare to see a black woman and white man have a steamy sex scene on network television. Bravo to AMC for going there, and not doing it in a gratuitous way. It’s a major development for the lead characters, but not remotely a surprise given their situation. Michonne, since her introduction in season three, has been an impressive character. She’s a zombie killing machine with a samurai sword, level headed, and incredibly resilient. But she’s also a nurturer, becoming a surrogate mother to Carl (Chandler Riggs) and baby Judith. Michonne has been an inseparable part of the Grimes family since the destruction of the prison in season four. Jessie’s kindness and beauty were a weakness, perfect fodder for an undead snack. Michonne is a proven, perfect mate for Rick in the deadly world they face. This unfortunately leads me to believe that her character is doomed.
Let’s dispel any romantic entanglements from the comics. Andrea is still alive and with Rick. Michonne has had multiple lovers. That storyline has no basis on the television show. Rick’s love life there is beset by tragedy, beginning with the cruel fate of his wife Lorrie (Sarah Wayne Callies). She sacrificed herself to give birth to Judith in season three. Rick’s mental collapse from her death, then the fight or flight situations thereafter, essentially scrubbed romance. Running for your life doesn’t leave time to date. It’s only when the characters were allowed to settle in Alexandria, that subplots for intimate relationships could be established. The introduction of Jessie as a love interest lends itself to the idea of a warm, cozy suburban life. This is not the brutal reality of The Walking Dead. She didn’t have the chops to make it. Michonne does, a true survivor. The question is whether the showrunners will allow Rick to achieve domestic bliss. That seems highly unlikely given their track record.
The women that Rick loves die. This fact does not bode well for Michonne. Their long friendship turning into romance is perfect for romcoms and English period costume dramas, not the end of civilization. It’s amazing that Glenn and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) have lasted this long. Then again, she is the last member of her family alive. The same goes for Carol (Melissa Suzanne McBride) and Spencer (Austin Nichols). Rick and his children, in my opinion, are the only safe characters on The Walking Dead. Their penance for life is suffering. They lose people close to them, and aren’t immune to pain, as Carl’s eye can attest. It seems like the perfect time to establish a deeper bond with Michonne, then to have her tragically killed.
The second half of the season is building up to the appearance of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the vilest baddie from the comics. Who famously dispatches a beloved character with a baseball bat upon his introduction. Last week’s episode ended with Michonne and Rick pulled from their afterglow slumber by Jesus (Tom Payne). He warns them that their world is about to get much bigger. This wasn’t stated as a threat, but it is indeed ominous. As Negan looms against the Alexandrians, Rick will be his nemesis, meaning his loved ones are a target. If Judith and Carl are untouchable, then it means Michonne is quite possibly the next heartbreak on deck.
